Finnegan's Lake Trout Fishery
Finnegan's Lake is approx 4.5 acres in size and started out life as a quarry. Due to this, the lake is shallow at one end and slopes down to about 40ft in depth. The lake is fed by springs that filter up through the rock and because of this it is very clear. The lake was first stocked about 5 years ago with about a thousand small trout which were then left to their own devices. Without any angling pressure and an abundance of natural food, the trout grew unhindered and matured into fine fish. After a couple of years some of the fish reached maturity and even though they are not meant to spawn in the wild in this country, they did. Whether it started out as just a handful of fertile fish, we will never know, but every Winter since then, the fish have spawned in increasing numbers and have grown into a self sustaining population of Wild Rainbow Trout. This is apparently extremely rare in both Ireland and the UK, especially in still water.
